In 1998, HEALTH CANADA initiated a review of its policies on Nutritional Labeling, which resulted in recommendations to adopt a nutritional format very similar to U.S. labeling.

The final regulations came into place on January 1, 2003. These new regulations require mandatory nutritional labeling for retail food products and the core information expanded from calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates to also include: saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, sugar, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Iron. All products were to be correctly labeled by December 12, 2005.
